To get in the mind of Joe Manganiello, the True Blood and Magic Mike actor who is helping us pick NFL games for Week 1, you have to understand that he loves the Steelers.
“Steeler football,” Manganiello said, when asked what excited him about the upcoming season. “Every Sunday. I need an offseason emotionally to rest up and get ready.”
So it goes without saying that he picked his Pittsburgh team over the Browns in Week 1. Manganiello knows his football, and stayed mostly with the favorites across the board. For the other AFC North game, Manganiello liked the Bengals to take care of business against the Raiders.
Manganiello kicks off an NFL season-long celebrity pick ‘em at For The Win.Hollywood’s biggest stars will join us each week to discuss their passions, new projects, and of course pick NFL games.
When it came to picking the Raiders over the Jets, Manganiello didn’t mince words. ““I think the Jets have been too much of a train wreck over the past couple years,” he said. “I think Rex Ryan did a great job coaching last year, but I just don’t believe in Geno [Smith]…I’m going to go with the rookie. I’m going to go with [Raiders quarterback] Derek Carr.”
Manganiello didn’t just pick football games, though. He also weighed in on several other important NFL questions.
Which NFL players he’d pick to fight a pack of ‘True Blood’ werewolves
I’d want the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Number one in the league. Statistically one of the greatest defenses of all time. And for some reason kind of overlooked past the 2000 Ravens and the ’78 Steelers, which I think is kind of ridiculous. You look, statistically, they were insane.
So I’d take those guys. Cause you’re gonna get James Harrison. You’re gonna got Troy [Polamalu]. You’re gonna get Ryan Clark, who I miss very much. You’re gonna get the Brett Kiesel. [LaMarr] Woodley was on that team. You’re gonna get some badass dudes on that squad. I’d go to battle with them.
His pick for greatest on-screen quarterbacks
We should go in reverse order. I haven’t seen it in a while, but Necessary Roughness Scott Bacula. No, maybe I’d go [James] Van Der Beek. I’d go Van Der Beek in Varsity Blues, that’d be number four. Then I’d go Scott Bacula number three.
Number two, forget The Replacements, I’d go [Keanu Reeves as] Johnny Utah. That’s one of the greatest character names ever and Point Break is a badass movie. But, in terms of movie quarterbacks, it’s difficult to beat [Jamie Foxx as] “Steamin’” Willie Beamen. You gotta go Willie Beamen as number one.
Who he’d pick to coach a team of vampires
Well, I hate vampires, so I wouldn’t even care. Who’s gonna coach the vampires? Tom Coughlin is the first one that comes to mind.
What he’d change if he was Roger Goodell
If I could figure out a way to get into a time machine as Roger Goodell and go back a few years to when James Harrison had all of those fines. There were a couple of those that were $75,000 fines for hitting a ball carrier who lowered his head while carrying the ball. I think, in my mind, that put a fear into James Harrison that he was going to get suspended, and I think that changed his career.
What he’d pick as Johnny Manziel’s nickname if he was in ‘Magic Mike’
Johnny Strip Club.
What he’d pick as Russell Wilson’s nickname if he was in ‘Magic Mike’
What he’d pick for the title of a buddy cop movie starring him and Troy Polamalu
Well, Troy went to USC so it would make sense that we’d both be in L.A. It would be L.A. Vice.
It’s me and Troy in the car, he’s kind of questioning me because I’m an actor guy, not too sure. But then in the first day on the job I take off out of the car and just completely, perfectly form-tackle some dude into the ground and just cuff him. Troy would grow some respect for me, and we’d kind of get along. But we’d come from different worlds
